Book 2 Post 1
The book that I've decided to read couldn't have come at a better time, I'm obviously talking about Feel-Good Productivity: How to Do More of What Matters to You by Dr. Ali Abdaal. The reason that I'm saying that this book couldn't have come at a better time is because of midterms, and there are certainly some classes that I am having to take that if I had the choice I would probably not choose (I'm talking about you excel). The beginning of the book itself caught me off guard and I knew that this wasn't going to be like any other self-help book, "Merry Christmas, Ali. Try not to kill anyone." Now prior to reading this sentence, I didn't know anything about Ali Abdaal, so the sentence certainly got me hooked to read the book, but after the first couple of pages it made a lot more sense that it was about Abdaal's journey as a doctor.
What I particularly liked about this book was that it, similar to our expert articles, laid out a clear roadmap and told us what the book was about. Moreover, when Abdaal talked about the candle problem, I knew this wasn't just going to be like any other self-help book where you are almost commanded certain things to do and told that THIS is the way to do something and if you don't do it this way then you're wrong. The fact that all of this was backed by science and Abdaal taught a systematic way of learning how to feel good while learning something was something I didn't even know was possible. Lastly, the experiment of gamifying and living your life like a video game character was something I knew I could take away and apply instantly. For example, my main goal for today was to book my spring break tickets and study for my strategy midterm, but my side quests for the day were to iron my clothes and return an item at Target.
I look forward to continuing this book - I feel it's going to be a good read!
