World We Imagine Part 1

 World We Imagine Part 1

Living in Dubai, I had the opportunity to play sports with people from various backgrounds, including many from Pakistan, even though I am originally from India. Despite the historical tensions between India and Pakistan, sports such as cricket brought us together, and ultimately transcended those deep-seated divides. One of my teammates, originally from Pakistan, eventually became my best friend, and despite now being based in the UK, we are still in touch with each other on a daily basis. That there is the power of sport. This friendship, that was forged on the cricket field, was initially surprising to my cousins back in India, which once again shows the power of sports and how it can challenge and change our preconceptions and biases. Because at the end of the day, we are all the same, we all have the same wants and needs, but we get divided by our own people.

Sport proves to be a powerful catalyst for unity and understanding and is hence would be the first step to make the world a better place. It also reminds me of Gary Vaynerchuk first arriving in the US as an immigrant and someone asking him what football team he supports? Barely being able to speak English and hence unable to reply he just stood silent, and then someone placed a Jets hat on his head saying, “you’re a jets fan now” and that was the end of it. All of a sudden, Garry felt a part of the community and a New Yorker. It is stories like this that remind me how important sports are and how we all can unite as one, and that is the world that I imagine and hope for my kids and the future generation.

  1. Hey Parth, I love your appreciation of what sports can do in terms of forming long term relationship. I think one way you could accomplish your goal of sharing your love of sports would be by being a camp counselor at a summer program to teach kids about sports. I know there are programs at USC, like Troy Camp, that work with students and get them involved in the community. Maybe here you could implement more sports.

  2. Hi Parth, I really enjoyed your story of sports bringing friends together. I do not know much about cricket, but I think it would be really interesting if you were able to start a club or intramural team on campus to bring even more people together!
